ESRI Southwest User's Group Conference - October 19-23, 2009 in Pueblo, Colorado
Socials and Special Events

Pueblo Community Social Project
Every day of the conference, participants checked out various GPS devices and headed to Pueblo's Historic Union Avenue to collect a few snippets of data to help Pueblo improve!

Pueblo will be using the collective brainpower of the best GIS Professionals in the Western US (that's you!) to help us improve our community. Attendees captured a variety of features along Union Avenue that they felt needed improvement - from ADA access issues, broken windows, bumpy pavement or storefronts that need help. The data attendees collected were compiled, and the folks who captured the data presented their findings at the end of the conference. Over 500 unique features were identified, and are being used to develop plans for improving the Union Avenue Historic District. We couldn't have done it all without SWUG!

Check back here soon for downloadable analyses of this project.

Many thanks to all the volunteers and brilliant folks who made this project a success! And remember, if you participated - count this project toward your GISP certification!

If you're in the process of applying for GISP certification, be sure to list your involvment in this project!

Vendor Social
Wednesday, October 21st at Pueblo Convention Center
5:00 – 7:30 PM
Conferencegoers mingled with the SWUG vendors, gnashing on various foods from the numerous ethnic groups that make up Pueblo. And, of course, live music from another local artist was a hit!

Geospatial Pub Crawl
Wednesday, October 21st – various locations
8:00 PM to whenever
This was a SWUG first, for sure!
"SWUGGIES" ventured throughout Pueblo's downtown in search of clues at various pubs. Participants were awarded prizes including t-shirts, hats and other fun stuff. The evening finished at the Gold Dust Saloon, where the staff of the saloon dressed in can-can outfits. CompassTools sponsored the beverages at the Gold Dust. And, as far as we know, everybody made it home safely.
We even picked up a SWUG mascot along the way - Chris Jr., the Sasquatch. For those that attended, the story behind this fellow was explained at lunch on Thursday...

Premier Social
Thursday, October 22nd at El Pueblo History Museum
5:30 – 8:00 PM
In SWUG tradition, with everyone's heads full of the latest GIS trends & techniques, we held an outside social event in the cool October air. The was held at the El Pueblo History Museum in downtown Pueblo, the site of the original Fort Pueblo. Here, SWUG featured authentic Pueblo cuisine, and attendees were invited to make their own tortillas while enjoying another local entertainer. Attendees brought their families, and a number of kids were seen dancing and keeping warm by the horno ovens in the placita. The fires were a hit, as the temperature dropped below 40 degrees.
When things wound down at El Pueblo, the hard-core SWUGGIES crossed the street to the Downtown Bar to whet their whistle and warm up!
