He has taught courses and workshops in GIS modeling for more than 30 years and serves as the Keck Visiting Scholar in Geosciences at the University of Denver and Adjunct Faculty member at Colorado State University. Prior to these assignments he was an Associate Professor and the Associate Dean at Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Science. He has written the “Beyond Mapping” column for GeoWorld since 1989 and has written over two hundred papers on the analytic capabilities of GIS and authored the popular books Beyond Mapping (Wiley, 1993), Spatial Reasoning (Wiley, 1995) and Map Analysis (GeoTec Media, 2007). Dr. Berry holds a B.S. degree in Forestry, a M.S. degree in business management, and a Ph.D. emphasizing remote sensing and land use planning.
Bern Szukalski
Bern Szukalski is a Pennsylvania native, and has a degree in Biology and Chemistry. Arriving at ESRI in 1986 with a background in both environmental consulting and biomedical research, he began his GIS career as an applications specialist working on the Peacekeeper Rail Garrison and CIA World DataBank projects. Over the past 23 years at ESRI, he has held a variety of positions and served in many different roles, encompassing a broad spectrum of GIS implementation and software development projects. Barbara Buttenfield
Barbara Buttenfield, Ph.D., University of Washington, 1984, is Professor and Director of the Meridian Lab, a research facility focusing on visualization and modeling of geographic information and technology. She teaches courses in Geographic Information Science, Computer Cartography, and Information Design and Representation. Her research interests focus on generalization, representations of uncertainty, and design of visualization tools for environmental modeling. She is currently developing algorithms for progressive transmission of vector data across the Internet. Dr. Buttenfield is a Past President of the American Cartographic Association. In 2001, she was named GIS Educator of the Year by the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science.
